Description
The Midland Bank, located at Bennett's Hill, was built in 1830 by architects Rickman and Eutchinson and later altered in 1868 by H. R. Yeoville Thomason. This stone building features five bays plus an entrance bay on the corner, with a seventh bay to the right that has a subsidiary entrance. The façade is distinguished by giant Corinthian columns and an entablature, set against a wall that has tall, narrow windows with moulded surrounds. Bold Corinthian pilasters frame the later pedimented principal entrance at the corner. On the return to Waterloo Street, there is a Corinthian tetrastyle portico leading to the entablature and pediment, with tall windows similar to those on the main façade. The property is complemented by early 19th-century iron railings and occupies an important corner site.
