Description

No. 44 Waterloo Street is a Grade II* listed building dating from around 1900, designed in a Perpendicular Gothic style. It is a five-storey structure featuring three bays arranged in a rhythm of 1:2, along with a polygonal corner turret that has an entrance below. There are an additional four bays on the return side facing Temple Row West.

The ground floor includes a subsidiary entrance accessed by steps, framed within a cusped and sub-cusped arch topped with a finial, and flanked by two cusped and sub-cusped arched windows. The principal entrance is also elevated by steps and is flanked by two orders of colonnettes, adorned with delicate decoration in the stilted arches. On either side of the entrance, polygonal shafts support beasts bearing shields inscribed with the letters O and A.

Each of the first, second, and third floors features three cross windows with cusped lights, positioned between horizontal moulded bands that vary in detail. The fourth floor is distinguished by three two-light ogee-headed windows. Thin banded polygonal buttresses rise on either side of the first bay, reaching nearly to the parapet height, while even thinner moulded shafts extend similarly on the left, right, and between the other bays. The polygonal corner turret and the return on Temple Row West are similarly fenestrated. All windows above the ground and first floors retain their original leaded lights. The parapet is topped with a complex gable-cum-chimney, and the corner turret features a pointed slate roof.
