Description

This is a small terrace of six houses, numbers 37 to 42 Ryland Road, dating from circa 1835-40. The houses are built of stucco and designed as a symmetrical composition with Grecian detailing. They have a plinth and a band marking the level of the first-floor windows. Pilasters are used on both floors, with variations in their design depending on their position within the terrace. The end bays have paired pilasters on the ground floor, topped with a capping and two wreaths in the frieze. At first floor level, these pilasters combine to form a single, broader pilaster with two wreaths above the capping. The central section exhibits matching pilasters on both floors, with a single wreath in the ground floor frieze and two above the first floor. The central carriage archway has channelled stucco to resemble stonework, and the door lintels have a similar effect. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the façade, projecting over the pilasters and terminating in block pediments. The first-floor windows are revealed, multi-paned sash windows. Around 1900, rectangular bay windows with arched central lights and bracketed cornices were inserted into the ground floor. Architrave surrounds the doorways, with the exception of the carriage arch, where the doors are simply revealed. Number 39 retains a small, glazed fanlight above its door.
