Description

This is a pair of semi-detached houses, numbers 74 and 75 Ryland Road, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840. They were developed in a cottage ornée style, incorporating Swiss and Tudor detailing. The houses are stucco-faced and have a plinth with rusticated quoins to the ground floor and a moulded and weathered sill course to the first floor. They have a low-pitched slate roof with deep, overhanging eaves trimmed with fretted bargeboards, rising into a shallow gable in the centre. Diagonally set chimney stacks are grouped along the ridge. The first floor has two-light diamond lattice casement windows set in shallow, chamfered reveals with dripmoulds. There is a chamfered cross in the gable, originally open to light the attic. The ground floor features two French windows with matching lattice glazing, shaped and set under dripmoulds. A broad, fretted bargeboard covers a coupled entrance with timber post detailing, leading to architrave framed, panelled and glazed doorways mirroring the window style. A coach house extension to number 74 has been altered, with dripmoulds to the first-floor broad, lattice casements.
