Description

Allens House, located at No 39 Mill Street, is a Grade II* listed building, likely dating from the late 16th century. This two-storey dwelling features heavy square timber framing and has a nearly continuous band of geometrical framing between the first floor level and the window sills above. The ground floor retains fragments of close set studding, while the rest has been rebuilt in colourwashed brickwork, fitted with modern wood casements and leaded lights. Most of the original leaded lights are still present in the upper floor casements. The building is topped with an old tile roof.

Inside, there is a 16th-century datestone above the fireplace, which may have been relocated from outside. All the listed buildings on both sides of Mill Street are part of a group.
