Description
The Gables is a two-storey house with origins in the 16th century, originally a single dwelling but previously two. The left-hand section of the front facade features early to mid-19th century timber framing with three similar gables flush with the wall, topped with bargeboards and an old tiled roof. The right-hand section, four bays wide, retains largely original close-set timber studding. Early, narrow window openings are visible between the studding, and these have been filled with facsimile leaded lights and “antique” glass, featuring slightly splayed jambs. The first floor is jettied, supported by carved brackets to the storey posts between the bays, with infilling of painted brickwork. The right-hand bay provides a wide entry to the rear, covered by a continuous roof, and has a facsimile oak door. A stone plinth is present, and the building is roofed with old tiles. Significant alterations to the rear of the property have been made, though they are considered satisfactory. The Gables is part of a group of listed buildings situated on both sides of Mill Street.
