Description

4 and 6 Clemens Street are two houses that have been converted into shops, built around 1808 to 1816 with later alterations, including mid-20th century ground floor shop fronts. The buildings are numbered from right to left, but described from left to right.

The exterior features two storeys and three bays, with a three-storey range on the left that has two first-floor windows and is angled on plan. The structure is made of brick with painted stucco facades and has Welsh slate roofs.

On the left range, the first floor has fielded Tuscan pilasters at the ends and between the bays. There is a central 8/8 sash window flanked by 4/4 sash windows, all set within a taller segmental-headed reveal. The side bays contain blind, round-arched recesses, and there is a cornice with a central pediment above.

The right range features two multi-pane casement windows in plain reveals on the ground floor, and on the second floor, there is a 3/3 sash window and a casement window, both in plain reveals with sills. This range also has a frieze and cornice, with a left stack that has a cornice. The ground floors have plate-glass shop fronts.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Clemens Street was laid out in 1808, with buildings on either side completed by 1818. Number 6 was formerly known as Marble Bath.
