Description
A terrace of six houses, now containing shops, flats and offices, located on the south side of Regent Street and including number 29 Portland House on Portland Street.
Built around 1826 with later 19th and 20th century shop fronts. The buildings are constructed in pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades. The roofs are concealed and Welsh slate. Cast-iron railings and balconies are prominent features throughout.
The main terrace presents three storeys with six first-floor windows, one serving each house. Between each house runs a recessed strip extending the full height of the building. The first-floor windows are 16-pane French windows with 4-pane side-lights and divided overlights in plain reveals. Most of these sit within wider, elliptically-arched recesses with tooled surrounds. The second floor contains eight 6/6 sash windows and two casements, all in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills. A continuous cornice, blocking course and copings run across the facade.
The ground floor includes many surviving side entrances to the original dwellings. To the left angle is a part-glazed door with overlight in a tooled surround with keystone, flanked by a projecting shop front with decorative pilasters. The next pair of entries serve numbers 30 and 28: both feature three roll-edged steps leading to 3-panel doors with overlights decorated with glazing bars, sheltered by shared distyle Doric porches with entablature. The three subsequent dwellings have steps leading to 4-panel doors with divided overlights set within surrounds featuring Doric pilasters and entablature. Number 24 has a projecting shop front with pillars at the angles and a central entrance with fanlight, while further right is a projecting glazed shop front with recessed part-glazed door. A hipped roof crowns the terrace, with tall ridge stacks, some corniced. A first-floor balconette appears at the left angle.
The left return features on the ground floor a plate-glass window between narrow pilasters and entablature. The first floor has two 6/6 sashes, one with tooled surround; the second floor has a 2/2 sash with margin-lights and a 6/6 sash with tooled surround; the third floor has a 3/6 sash with tooled surround. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. A cornice and parapet complete this elevation.
The right return (number 29 Portland House, Portland Street) rises to three storeys with attic and basement. The first floor features centrally placed part-glazed French windows between 6/6 sashes. The second floor contains 3/6 sashes, and the ground floor 6/6 sashes. All openings have tooled architraves and sills. A central entrance is reached by seven steps to a part-glazed, 4-panel door with decorative overlight, set within a porch formed by two pillars with panels and engaged pilasters, frieze and cornice. The basement level includes a glazed door, cornice and blocking course. Attic dormers and end and ridge stacks complete this elevation. A notable central balcony on the first floor displays a figure-of-eight and Greek key motif balustrade.
Attached railings to number 26 Regent Street and to Portland House, positioned to the left side of the steps, feature bars with anthemion finials.
Regent Street was laid out circa 1808 to 1814, with the first terrace constructed in 1814. Portland Street was built circa 1826 to 1836. This terrace corresponds in design with the earliest houses on Portland Street, numbers 10 and 12.
