Description

The Old School Room is a school building constructed in 1841. It is made of Flemish bond brick and features a Welsh slate roof with pedimental gable ends. There is a lateral brick stack on the west side. The building has a rectangular plan and consists of a single cell schoolroom with a fireplace on the west side. The entrance is located at the south end and includes a later 19th-century porch, along with two doorways leading to an outshut and a walled yard at the north end.

The exterior is single-storey. The south end has a brick pedimental gable with a small round brick panel and a stone tablet below in the tympanum. The central brick porch has a gable and a doorway on the left side featuring a flush-panel door. There are windows on either side of the doorway, each with a stone ogee-headed frame, hoodmoulds, and small-pane iron windows with pointed top panes. The east and west sides also have similar windows, with two on the east and three on the west. At the north end, there is a doorway with a flat brick arch leading to a small walled yard with an outshut on the east side.

Inside, the schoolroom is open to the tie-beam roof and has painted brick walls. The original six-panel entrance door is located at the south end, with two doorways at the north end leading to the yard and outshut. There is a small fireplace on the west side, although its chimneypiece and grate are missing. An indenture from 1841 indicates that Edward Banister conveyed the land for the school building to Reverend William Evans and the churchwardens for £25, with the funds raised by public subscription.
