Description

This is a mid-18th century cottage with an attached shop, originally a house or two cottages. The building is constructed of squared, coursed limestone with a stone slate and 20th-century tile roof, and has a brick ridge stack. The building has two storeys and a three-window front. It follows a three-unit plan. To the centre left and right are plank stable doors with wooden lintels, each covered by a 20th-century gabled hood. A 20th-century two-light casement window sits to the left and centre, also with original wooden lintels. First-floor windows include a 20th-century casement rising above the eaves with a flat top, and a 19th-century two-light casement above a matching ground-floor window, both with wooden lintels. The Cottage's roof extends over a carriageway and incorporates original purlins, a collar, and most rafters. A queen strut truss is visible, along with a lath and plaster gable top, and an old plank door. There is rebuilt brick walling below the roofline. Inside the shop, a chamfered spine beam with run-out stops remains, although the rear has been altered. The Cottage contains ceiling beams. The building is included for group value.
