Description
This is a manor house dating from the early to mid 16th century, with additions made in the early 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with quoins, and has coped gables and a stone slate roof. The roof features ashlar end stacks and a large external stack with diagonally set flues, a moulded plinth and cornice. The building is two storeys plus an attic, with a 4-window front and three gables rising to the ridge level, arranged in an L-shape with a rear wing added in the early 20th century.
The central right side of the front features a 20th-century plank door within a 4-centred, moulded surround, featuring a carved face on the lintel. The ground floor has a range of three windows: a 2-light, a 3-light, and a 4-light window, all ovolo-moulded and mullioned. The 4-light window on the right has a king mullion. A double-chamfered 4-light mullioned window is located to the left. The first floor has a range of one 2-light and two 3-light double-chamfered mullioned windows, plus a 4-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window on the right with a king mullion. The gables on the left and centre feature double-chamfered 2-light mullioned windows, with a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window in the gable on the right. All mullioned windows have hood moulds with label stops, and most retain old glass within their leaded lights. The left facade has a 4-light mullioned and transomed ovolo-moulded window on the ground floor, a 4-light ovolo-moulded and mullioned window above, and a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window in the left gable. The right gable has two 2-light and one 3-light double-chamfered mullioned windows, with a 2-light mullioned window between the gables—the ground floor window being ovolo-moulded. The rear gable incorporates a 4-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and transomed window, with 4- and 3-light windows above. A smaller gabled range with a 3-light ovolo-moulded wood mullioned window and wooden lintel is also present on the rear, alongside a large 20th-century gabled range. A barn, attached by a passage on the right side, has been converted into a room and features 20th-century mullioned and transomed windows, a 4-centred arched door, and four hipped dormers. The barn has been raised to the rear in the 20th century.
Inside, there are three stone fireplaces with 4-centred arches: one with carved spandrels, another with a heavily moulded surround of ringed shafts and carved spandrels, and a third featuring a Tudor portcullis. The building also includes spine beams, some heavily moulded, a reset Jacobean fireplace, and reset linen-fold panelling. A single-light window is chamfered and features a moulded ogee head. The roof of the main range is a queen post construction with arched brace collar trusses, while the service cottage range attached to the rear has a roof that may be older than the main building.
