Description

The Howard Arms Inn and attached outbuilding is a pair of houses that now functions as an inn, dating from the 18th century and early 19th century. The building is constructed from squared, coursed limestone and features coped gables and quoins on the middle range. It has a 20th-century tiled roof with ashlar and brick stacks at the ends. The inn is two storeys high and has a six-window range.

On the left side, there is a 20th-century plank door in the center, framed by a gabled porch. To either side of the door are canted bays with 16-pane and 8-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are 19th-century three-light casement windows with wooden lintels, along with two dormers.

The larger range on the right has a plank door on the left, which features a fanlight and a moulded round-headed arch. To the right, there are three twelve-pane windows, each with fanlights, round-headed arches, and stone sills. On the first floor, there is a row of four sash windows, with the leftmost being the original nine-pane design, all set within moulded architraves.

The stone outbuilding range to the right has a coped gable and a tiled roof, consisting of three bays. The left side features a weatherboarded opening with 20th-century double plank doors in the center. To the right, there are two twelve-pane windows with fanlights and moulded round-headed arches, along with a single double-chamfered stone light on the left gable end.

Inside, there is a two-light mullioned window in the rear wall, which is now internal. The outbuilding has a queen strut roof with collars, stop-chamfered spine beams, stone flagged floors, and an open fireplace, all of which are part of the 18th-century range.
