Description

A terrace of five houses was built in the late 18th or early 19th century, with later additions and alterations including rear extensions. The houses are constructed of reddish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with gabled Welsh slate roofs and brick stacks. The houses have a two-unit or single-unit plan.

The external appearance is characterised by two storeys and nine first-floor windows arranged in a pattern of 2:2:1:2:2. There are five entrances, with 20th-century board and glazed doors, except for Ivy Cottage, which has a six-panel door with two glazed lights in a moulded wooden frame. Most windows are 20th-century casements. Ground-floor windows at Ivy Cottage have flat arches with keystones, while other ground-floor windows have wide cambered arches. Four first-floor windows to the right have elliptical arches with hoodmoulds. A two-course brick band runs along the front of Abbeville and The Shieling, and the first floor slightly projects to the right of the remaining houses. There is a brick dentilled eaves cornice throughout, as well as ridge and end stacks.

The interiors retain exposed beams and joists in most ground-floor rooms.
