Description
Wellesbourne Hall is a country house dating from around 1700, with alterations made in the 1760s and the 20th century. It is constructed of brick with vitrified headers in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring limestone ashlar dressings, and has a steeply pitched hipped and gabled old tile roof with brick internal stacks. The architectural style demonstrates early-Georgian design, employing a H-plan layout.
The exterior presents as a symmetrical composition, with two storeys plus an attic, consisting of a central three-bay range flanked by two-bay projecting wings. Notable features include an ashlar plinth, a brick plat band above the ground floor, a top cornice, and quoins. The entrance features a Tuscan doorcase with an open pediment and a fanlight above a panelled and glazed door. Windows are fitted with architraves and 6/6 sash windows within flush wood frames, complemented by four pedimented dormers.
The interior's entrance hall showcases a gallery with twisted balusters and a string detailed with acanthus scrolls. It includes a 20th-century staircase and an 18th-century frieze. Much of the interior dates to around 1760 and later, exhibiting Adam-style plaster ceilings and fireplaces, two of which feature shell-work created by Mary Delaney. There are also reputed fragments from the demolished Theatre Royal, Birmingham, incorporated within the building.
