Description

The Old Stores is a house, originally built in the 1670s and later divided into three homes, now comprising two houses. It features brick construction with some timber-framing and brick infill, as well as plastered timber-frame sections. The roof is gabled and thatched, with a truncated end external stack and a ridge stack at the junction of the properties. The building has a three-unit plan.

The exterior is a single storey with an attic and has a three-window range. The centre section retains some timber-framing, while the left end has been refaced in brick and the right end is plastered. There are two entrances to the left of centre (No.15), both with doorcases that have pilasters and entablatures. The left entrance features fluted pilasters and a six-fielded-panel door, two panels of which are glazed. The right entrance has a four-flush-panel door. The entrance to the right of centre (No.13) has a 20th-century door and canopy.

Flanking the entrances on the left are 19th-century canted bay windows with hipped tile roofs; one has sash windows and the other has casements. The right end has a 20th-century bow window with a narrow light to the right, both featuring small-paned glazing. There are two raking dormers with two-light small-paned casements, and an additional dormer at the right end has a three-light small-paned casement. The right return has a canted brick addition under a hipped tile roof, with 20th-century windows. The building also has gabled rear wings.

Historically, some small-scale coarse hosiery weaving is believed to have occurred here in the first half of the 19th century, and No.13 was once a shop.
