Description
The Red House is a house dating from around 1745, with alterations from the 19th century. It was built for T. Ayleworth. The building is constructed of brick with stone and ashlar dressings, and has a hipped roof covered in old tiles, with two brick stacks on the returns. It is of a Georgian style, arranged in an L-shape.
The exterior has two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front. A central forward projection is topped by a pediment. Features include a stone plinth, a brick plat band above the ground floor, and a top modillioned cornice. The round-headed entrance has a doorcase with pilasters and a bracketed open pediment, above a fanlight with decorative glazing bars above a six-panel door. Ground floor canted bay windows have hipped lead roofs and 6/6 sash windows with side lights. First floor windows have moulded sills and wedge lintels with key blocks over 6/6 sash windows in moulded frames. The left return has a modillioned brick eaves cornice. The rear of the house has two gables.
The interior was not inspected.
