Description
The Homestead, which incorporates the adjoining Post Office, is probably of 15th-century origin, with additions and alterations made in the 17th century. The building showcases cruck construction, with a facade of ironstone and brick, rendered with reconstituted stone, and a new tile roof. A brick end stack has been added, while the original ridge stack is no longer present. The building is one storey high with an attic, originally designed as a hall house. A 19th-century plank door is positioned centrally to the left and right, the left one with a 20th-century porch. To the left is a 19th-century three-light casement window with a wooden lintel, and to the right are two gabled dormers containing 20th-century casement windows. A one-storey outbuilding range, extending forward from the right side, now serves as the Post Office, featuring a 19th-century plank door and a two-light window. A large 20th-century stone extension has been added to the rear.
Inside, there are three pairs of full or raised crucks, with the central cruck featuring a king post rising from the collar to the ridge piece. The collar is arch braced, with further struts tying the cruck blades to the collar and a composite saddle. A later smoke bay frame is now hidden, and the smoke bay bressumer has been removed. A 17th-century floor was inserted at a later date.
