Description

Payn's House is a house built in the early and mid 18th century. It features squared, coursed ironstone and brick in Flemish bond, with a stone plinth, quoins, a storey band on the left range, a coped gable on the left, and slate roofs. There are brick end stacks, with the one on the left having a stone base. The house has two storeys and a four-window range, with an L-shaped plan.

On the right side of the early 18th-century range, there is a six-panelled door set in a moulded stone surround with a hood mould. To the left of the door are two- and three-light leaded casements with lintels and keyblocks, and a storey band above. On the first floor, there are two- and three-light leaded casements. The mid 18th-century brick range extending forward from the right has a blocked doorway with a moulded stone surround inscribed with the date 1749, and a hood mould above. To the left and right of this doorway are 16-pane casements, with three-light leaded casements above. The windows have segmental brick arches.

Attached to the left is a two-storey, one-unit stone and brick range. Inside, there are stone flagged floors in the lobby, a large inglenook with a cambered, chamfered bressumer and a blocked bread oven, and a chamfered spine beam with stepped stops. Old plank doors are set in moulded wood surrounds, and the beams upstairs are chamfered with run-out stops.
