Description

Avon Cottage (number 18) and Clifford Cottage (number 19) with their attached front garden wall date from the 16th and early 17th centuries, although they were re-fronted in the 18th century. They are built of painted brick with some timber framing and have steeply pitched tile roofs with brick stacks, one to the party wall and one at the end, both set forward of the ridge. Avon Cottage (number 18) has a single-unit plan, while Clifford Cottage (number 19) has a two-unit plan.

The cottages are single storey with an attic. The front of Avon Cottage (number 18) has exposed wall posts flanking the entrance, which has an architrave surround to a 20th-century door. A window to the right has a timber lintel over a three-light casement with small panes, and a similar casement is found in a flat-roofed half-dormer. The left return has timber framing with brick infill. Clifford Cottage (number 19) has a segmental-headed entrance with a 20th-century split door. A window to the left has a timber lintel over a three-light casement with small panes, while two segmental-headed windows to the right have two-light casements with small panes. Two gabled dormers have two-light leaded casements with iron opening mechanisms. A projecting chimney breast and a window with a small-paned casement to the first floor are visible on the right return.

The interior of Avon Cottage (number 18) was not inspected but is noted to have timber-framed internal walls and wind braces to the roof.

A garden wall runs along the right end and the length of the cottages, with saddleback coping and two gates. The gate to Avon Cottage (number 18) is a plank gate with a segmental head.
