Description
Hill Farm Cottage is a building that likely dates from the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. These include a rebuilding of the front wall in the mid-18th century and a rear extension on the left side, as well as a porch added in the 1970s. The cottage is timber-framed with reddish-brown brick facades primarily laid in stretcher bond, sitting on a lias stone plinth on the left. It has a gabled roof covered with plain tiles and originally follows an L-plan with a range extending to the rear on the right.
The exterior features a single storey and attic with a two-window range. There are two central entrances with board doors set in moulded wood frames, flanked by two outer three-light metal casement windows, all of which are positioned under elliptical arches. The roof has two dormers, each with three-light casement windows, and the end stacks are topped with cornices.
Inside, the cottage displays extensive exposed small square panels of timber-framing on the rear and partition walls. It has chamfered spine beams and exposed joists, with an inglenook on the left that includes a bressumer beam. The first floor features a central jowled stud, an interrupted tie-beam, and exposed purlins. The right extension contains two massive jowled studs and additional exposed timber-framing, along with more exposed purlins.
