Description
Coughton Post Office, which includes No. 2 Coughton Lane, is a house that now serves as a post office and tea room, along with a separate cottage. It dates from the 17th century, with a front added in the 18th century. The building is timber framed, featuring square framing with brick infill. The front is made of brick, adorned with a brick string course and a brick dentil cornice, while there is a brick range on the right side. The roof is covered with old tiles and has brick stacks. The structure is L-shaped, extended to a T-shape, and has two storeys plus an attic, with a five-window range.
The central shop front, which dates from the late 18th or 19th century, includes a panelled half-glazed door and two bow windows with glazing bars and reeded wood surrounds, topped with a continuous shaped fascia. To the right of the shop front is a six-panelled part-glazed door with a moulded wood surround. The windows and doors are made of wood and iron, featuring glazing bars and are set under cambered brick arches. There are three hipped dormers on the roof. The lower two-storey, two-window range to the right has blocked openings with cambered arches on the ground floor and two three-light leaded casements with crown glass on the first floor.
The left side of the building, facing Coughton Lane, has an external stack. At the rear, the timber framing is exposed, and the timber-framed wing (No. 2 Coughton Lane) has jowled posts. There is a large internal stack with two shafts, one made of thin bricks. The rear features a plank door and a small 20th-century trellis porch, along with 19th and 20th-century casements. Inside, the timber framing is also exposed.
