Description

Coughton House is a house dating from the late 16th and 17th centuries, with later 19th-century additions and alterations, and a subsequent restoration. It is constructed of timber framing, with the left section exhibiting smaller framing and the right section larger framing, both with lath and plaster infill. The right wing is of whitewashed brick. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-shape. It has two storeys and an attic, with a 4-window front. The window openings are irregular; the ground floor features 5-light and paired 3-light wood mullioned and transomed windows, while the first floor has casements with leaded lights. The later addition has wood mullions and transoms. An entrance is located on the right return side of the addition, featuring a half-glazed door and overlight, both with glazing bars. A glazed Gothic porch fronts the entrance, with a half-glazed door, turned balusters, and elaborate pierced bargeboards. The left return side reveals exposed timber framing, and exhibits a further 19th-century wing. The rear elevation is entirely of 19th-century brickwork, with irregular window placement. The interior was not inspected, but retains some exposed timber framing.
