Description

Woad House is a house that features a 14th-century wing, was dated in 1593, and has 18th-century alterations. It is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone and has a tile roof with brick end and ridge stacks. The building is designed in a T-plan, with a cross wing on the left side. It has two storeys and a four-window range. The entrance, located in the corner, has a late 17th-century or 18th-century doorway that includes a moulded eared architrave, entablature, central console, and a moulded cornice that breaks forward in the center. The door is ribbed.

The stone-mullioned windows, some of which have been partly renewed, feature hood moulds on the ground floor. The wing has five-light windows, while the first floor showcases a notable Decorated window, possibly re-set, with two trefoiled lights and a mullion that continues to the apex, along with mouchettes and a hood mould that has remains of carved stops. The main range has three-light windows to the right and above the entrance, as well as two-light windows. At the rear, the wing has a datestone that is now barely legible and no windows.

Inside, the hall includes a large open fireplace with a stop-chamfered bressumer. The broad-chamfered cross beams have stops and carvings. There is a stone four-centre-arched doorway and old plank doors. The 17th-century open well staircase features turned balusters, and the kitchen has a wide open fireplace with a bread oven.
