Description

Contone House is a house built in 1668, constructed from regularly coursed ironstone with a tile roof featuring gable parapets and remnants of finials. The building has a brick stack at the left end and another at the ridge. It has a 4-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-window range. The central door, which is from the 20th century, is ribbed and has strap hinges set in chamfered stone surrounds. There is a 20th-century stone and timber open porch.

The fourth bay features surviving 3-light stone mullioned windows with hood moulds, while the other windows have had their mullions removed and now contain 18th-century leaded casements, two of which have flat arches beneath hood moulds. A datestone located between the first and second bays on the first floor has a shaped panel with a rosette and fleurs-de-lys, and it inscribes that the house was 'reedefied at the charge of Thomas Blicke and Elizabeth his wife'. The right corner is chamfered on the ground floor, and the right return sides have mullioned windows.

The irregular rear of the house includes a small 19th-century brick wing with a slate roof, which may have once served as a granary, and there is an external stone staircase. Although the interior was not inspected, the Victoria County History notes a wide open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and chamfered ceiling beams.
