Description

The Old School, now divided into four houses, was built in 1883 and altered in the 1980s. It is constructed of brick in English bond, with limestone ashlar dressings, and has machine-tile roofs with decorative cresting and finials. A central tile-hung bell-turret and brick stacks are also present. The building is designed in a Gothic Revival style and has a H-shaped plan.

The exterior is single-storey and symmetrical with a five-window range. The central gable and end gables break forward. It features a plinth, offset buttresses, and a flush sill band. The central gable is coped with kneelers and the end gables have moulded verges, banding, and small slits. The central gable has paired pointed entrances with half-glazed doors, margin lights, tall fanlights with small-paned glazing, and a small round window above, all contained within a trefoil relieving arch with a hood. There are three windows to each side of the centre, with small-paned glazing above larger nine-pane glazing; some late 20th-century skylights are present.

The wings have pairs of pointed windows with hoods and six/nine-pane glazing to the lower sashes and small-paned glazing to the arches. The wing to the left has a stack to the angle with fillets and a cornice. The bell-turret has an open timber structure with a swept pyramidal roof; ventilation louvres are at the base on both sides.

The right return, facing School Lane, has a gabled entrance with moulded verges and three stepped lights over a pointed arch with splayed jambs, a battened door with strap hinges, and a stack to the left with a diagonal shaft. A small-paned window is to the left and three segmental-headed windows are to the right.

The left return, facing Milking Lane, has a gable over two pointed windows. An entrance with a 20th-century door is to the left, and there is a 20th-century window at the end of the rear wing. The rear of the building has two rear stacks and a hipped projection to the longer wing to the left.

The interior was not inspected. The building has group value with other listed items along High Street.
