Description
The Bascote Heath and Stoneythorpe War Memorial is located on a wayside green on the east side of Bascote Heath Lane in the hamlet of Bascote Heath. Made of Hornton stone, the memorial features a wheel-head cross that stands approximately 2.5 meters high. Three of the terminals of the cross-head are stepped. The main dedicatory inscription is incised on the front face of the tapering cross shaft and reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM BASCOTE HEATH AND STONEY THORPE WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918," listing seven names.
The shaft is set on a rectangular, tapering, chamfered plinth, which bears the inscription: "OUR DEAD LIE SCATTERED FAR AND WIDE ON PLAIN AND MOUNT AND SEA BUT SINCE FOR THEE THEY FOUGHT AND DIED THEY SURELY REST WITH THEE." The plinth is supported by two rectangular steps, and the entire memorial is positioned on a base of stone flags that are flush with the surrounding grass verge.
