Description
The Lodge, Sundial Cottage, and Pear Tree Cottage are a row of three cottages located in Knightcote, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with possible earlier origins and later alterations from the late 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed from squared coursed ironstone and feature a straw thatched roof with coped gable parapets at both ends; the left gable has a finial, while the ridge and right end stacks are rebuilt in brick. The cottages are arranged in a T-plan with a front wing, standing two storeys tall with an attic and a total of seven windows across the front.
The Lodge, situated on the left, has a three-window range, a part-glazed 20th-century plank door, and a thatched open porch. To the right, there is a full-length sash window, along with two 20th-century windows with glazing bars on the left. The first floor features a two-light casement window with glazing bars on the left, and leaded four-light and two-light casements.
Sundial Cottage has a plank door located in the angle, a two-light casement window to the right, and a three-light chamfered stone mullioned window above. The left wing includes 19th-century casements with three, two, and a single attic light, all with horizontal glazing bars on the ground floor. Notably, there is a painted 18th-century sundial above the ground floor window.
Pear Tree Cottage features a 19th-century panelled half-glazed door set under a brick round arch and has a shallow projection on the left, possibly a bread oven. The first floor has tripartite sashes, which have been replaced with a similar case vent on the left. A swept dormer on the right contains a small three-light painted leaded wood mullioned window. Throughout the cottages, wood lintels, mostly painted, can be found. The interiors are reported to have old beams and an open fireplace.
