Description

6 Main Street is a house that dates from the 16th to early 17th century, although it has been largely rebuilt and altered in the 19th century, with further changes made in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame with infill, and its underbuilding and rebuilding are done in Flemish bond brick. It has a plain-tile roof, with brick on the right end and two ridge stacks. The house has a T-plan layout with a cross wing on the left and stands two storeys high, presenting a three-window range.

A 20th-century open porch located in the angle of the building has a hipped plain-tile roof. The right return side of the cross wing features an eight-panelled door. The main range, which is made of brick, has late 20th-century two- and three-light casements, with a central casement that has been inserted into a former doorway. The ground-floor openings are topped with brick segmental arches. The cross wing has 19th-century three-light casements with glazing bars, flanked by single lights on the ground floor. The first floor displays massive corner posts, and the gable reveals exposed framing.

The left return side also shows exposed framing on the first floor. Inside, there is a straight-flight staircase with moulded handrails, newels with finials, and cut-out splat balusters leading to the first floor. The room to the left has a broad-chamfered ceiling beam and an altered open fireplace with a moulded bressumer. The first floor retains some exposed framing and features old plank doors, some of which have been imported from other locations. The roof structure includes queen struts. The building is included for its group value.
