Description
No. 36 Coventry Road is a house that was formerly two cottages, dating from the 16th or 17th century, with 18th-century and later refacing and decorative framing. The structure is cruck-framed with brick walls and may have been built in two phases. The front features a thatched roof, while the rear has a corrugated iron roof. There are stacks at the ridge and end. The building has one storey plus an attic and a three-window range. The 18th-century plank door is set within a moulded wood architrave with bases. The ground floor windows are 19th-century three-light casements, with the left window having a brick lintel. There are four dormers on the roof, which include 19th-century casements and a 20th-century two-light casement on the right. A small wing at the rear was part of a third cottage that has since been demolished.
Inside, the two bays to the right feature two pairs of cruck blades with tie-beams and collars in the attic. There may be one additional cruck where the cottages adjoin, but only the upper part remains. Most of the beams on the ground floor are chamfered, with some featuring ogee stops. There are also some original plank doors.
