Description
North Lodge is a lodge building, built between 1908 and 1909 by Gilbert Fraser of Liverpool for John Lancaster, as one of a pair intended as gardener’s cottages within the Dunchurch Lodge Estate. Later alterations and additions occurred in the mid to late 20th century. The lodge is constructed of thin brown brick with stone dressings and has hipped Westmoreland slate roofs, featuring a prominent coped ridge stack. The ground floor windows have stone surrounds and mullions, while the first-floor windows are wooden, through-eaves hipped dormers. All windows have original leaded glazing and are casements. The lodge is two storeys high and has a 1x3 bay front. The left side of the front elevation has a plain doorway with a shouldered, half-round stone hood. To the right of the doorway is a three-light window, and above, a three-light dormer. The left return has two single-light windows, and a four-light dormer above. A slightly projecting bay, extended in the mid-20th century, is located to the left, containing two three-light windows and a four-light dormer above. The rear elevation features a late 20th-century patio window and a four-light dormer. The right return has attached single-storey outbuildings and a yard.
The interior of the lodge includes a main room with a cornice, a dogleg staircase with square newels and a balustrade panelled over, several original three-panel doors, and a rear patio window.
North Lodge forms an important element of the Edwardian estate design at Dunchurch Lodge.
