Description

Clare Cottage is a row of three cottages, originally four, dating to the 17th century with later alterations. The walls are plastered puddled clay; the return sides and left corner have been rebuilt in brick, with roughcast to the right. The roof is thatched and has brick ridge and left end stacks. Each cottage was originally planned with two units. They are one storey and attic, with a four-window range and swept dormers throughout, facing a garden. Number 68, on the left, has a part-glazed plank door and a 20th-century open-fronted porch with a small projection on the right. A three-light leaded casement window is present to the left. The first floor has two-light casements throughout, with glazing bars. Clare Cottage has a central, thatched half-glazed porch from the mid/late 20th century, with double-leaf doors and a plank door inside. The three-light casements have differing horizontal glazing bars, with old leaded lights on the first floor to the left and a 20th-century window to the right. Number 65 has a 20th-century door on the right and leaded, mid-20th century, metal three-light casement windows. The rear elevation has a six-window range with deep-set windows, mostly 20th century. Number 68 has old single and two-light leaded casements at the rear. The interiors were not inspected.
