Description
Madrigal Cottage comprises two cottages, originally built in the 17th century, with some rebuilding and an extension occurring in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The front walls are of plaster and puddled clay, with brick and stone used elsewhere. The roof is thatched, with brick ridge and end stacks. Originally, each cottage was a single unit, but No. 78 was extended to two units. The cottages are one storey and attic, featuring a two-window front. No. 78 has a brick porch with a slate roof in the right corner, a late 20th-century glazed door to the left return, and a casement window to the front. An old plank door, with a trellis porch, is located on the left return of No. 78. The entrance to No. 77 is at the rear. The front windows include a three-light casement on the left and a two-light casement on the right, both with brick segmental arches and glazing bars. A fire window is also present. Swept dormers feature two-light casements, with leaded glass to the left and cross glazing to the right. A 19th-century lean-to extends from the left return. The rear of No. 77 has an old plank door and a 20th-century trellis porch on the right, along with three ground-floor, two-light casements with glazing bars. Each cottage has a two-light eyebrow dormer, with a horizontal glazing bar to the left and leaded glass to the right. Inside No. 77, there are old winder stairs, three-plank doors with strap hinges, and a kitchen with an 18th or early 19th-century built-in corner cupboard with panelled doors.
