Description

No. 97 Long Street is a mid-18th century house that has been converted into a shop. The building is rendered and features a plain-tile roof with a shaped gable at the right end and a brick stack on that side. Originally designed in an L-shape, it has been significantly extended to the rear. The structure has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range.

The left corner of the building features a fielded six-panelled door set within an early 19th-century painted wood surround that has reeded detailing and corner roundels. There is a slight projection between the first and second bays, which includes another fielded six-panelled door with a blind fanlight, framed by a late 18th or early 19th-century painted wood doorcase supported by Tuscan Doric half-columns and topped with an open pediment.

The late 19th-century shop front has undergone some alterations and includes central half-glazed double-leaf doors, flanked by two bays with narrow curved vertical panels at the outer angles, all beneath a continuous entablature. On the first floor, the windows are sashes with moulded frames, set beneath rendered rusticated flat arches that feature keyblocks. The building is finished with a moulded cornice and a parapet that has balustrading above each bay, with small fluted urns at the corners.
