Description

The New Swan Inn is a public house dating from the 18th century, with remodels from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick with a stuccoed front and right return side, topped by a plain tile roof that is hipped to the right and features deep boxed eaves, along with a rebuilt brick ridge stack. The building has a triple-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with three bays.

The front facing Church Street is mostly symmetrical, showcasing banded rustication on the ground floor and scored stucco with alternating quoins on the upper floors. It features double-leaf sash doors with a blocked overlight set within a projecting simple Tuscan doorcase that includes pilasters and an entablature. The ground floor has bay windows, with a 16-pane sash window at the front and curved 8-pane sashes on the sides. There is a narrower canted bay window above on the left and a larger canted bay window on the right. There are no central or second-floor windows.

The left return side, made of colourwashed brick, has irregular gabled ranges, while the right return side facing Derby Lane has a three-window range. The left corner features a 16-pane sash window in a projecting surround with simple Tuscan pilasters and an entablature, along with a recessed 20th-century door and two 20th-century windows. The upper floors contain sash windows, with 6-pane sashes on the second floor. Inside, there are some chamfered beams, one of which has an ogee stop.
