Description
14 and 18 Market Street are two buildings that now serve as offices and a public convenience, forming part of a row. The building on the right, facing Market Place, dates from the late 18th century, while the left building is from the mid 19th century. Both are constructed of Flemish bond brick with moulded rendered dressings. The right building features an old plain-tile roof and a central brick stack. It has a two-unit plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a two-window range. The first bay contains sashes with glazing bars only in the upper half. There is a canted bay, now blind, on the right, with a blind sash above it. The openings have rendered flat arches with keyblocks. The main front faces the Market Place and includes a mid to late 19th century moulded four-panelled door with an overlight on the right. A former wide opening has been reduced to a late 20th century doorway with vents, both featuring 19th century brick segmental arches. The first floor has a large gauged brick blank arch with imposts that have guilloche bands, and a Venetian window with a moulded surround. The gable is pedimented and features a Diocletian window.
The left building, facing Market Street, has a slate roof and a brick ridge stack. It has a double-depth plan, is three storeys tall, and also has a two-window range. A former wide opening on the left has been reduced to a late 20th century doorway with vents, while there is a window on the right. The canted right side features a late 20th century glazed door and panel. Sashes are present throughout, with nine panes on the second floor. All openings have chamfered rendered flat arches with keyblocks.
