Description

The stable block at Hartshill Yard, located on the Coventry Canal, is a Grade II listed building. This structure, built of brick and stone, features a dentilled eaves course and a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high, comprising a former stable and cartshed on the ground floor with a hay-loft above. The wall facing the road is made of rubblestone, which may suggest the remnants of an earlier building.

The yard wall has five bays. From left to right, there is a narrow, round-arched opening that leads into a small brick privy chamber with partially rendered walls and a wooden twin-holed seat over a void. Next, there are two larger elliptical arched openings, the second of which has double plank doors. Following these are two smaller segmental arched openings with wooden plank doors. To the right of these openings, there is a small lean-to extension. Above, two small segmental arched windows can be found. The east end of the building features a curved wall and kicked-up eaves, while below, the wall line is altered by a 20th-century doorway with plank doors. At the rear of the building, there is a pigsty range with an open sty.

Inside, the flooring is brick-paved, and a wooden closed tread staircase leads up to the hay-loft, which is supported by queen-post type trusses and a rafter and purlin roof. This building is included for its group value with the significant collection of listed buildings at Hartshill Yard.
