Description
The former crossing keeper's cottage, built around 1847 by J W Livock for the Trent Valley Railway, is a notable example of 19th-century railway architecture. Constructed from red brick with stone dressings, it features a dark blue/grey fish-scale tile roof adorned with stone-coped Dutch gables. The cottage has brick internal and end stacks, with the internal stack having three diagonally set flues and the end stack having one. Designed in Jacobean style, the building is L-shaped and single-storey.
The façade facing the track includes a two-light casement window with a stone surround, accompanied on the left by a gable that has a projecting end stack. The cottage is accented with darker brick quoins and a projecting plinth. On the left side, there are two additional two-light casement windows, while the right end gable features a gabled porch with a stone doorway that is currently blocked by a casement. Various single-storey extensions fill the angle of the L-plan at the rear.
