Description
Gramer's Almshouses are a group of three almshouses, originally six, built in 1728 and founded by James Gramer. They are located in Mancetter and feature whitewashed brick with a wood dentil cornice and a plain-tile roof, which has three mid to late 20th-century brick ridge stacks. The building has one storey and consists of 12 bays. The doors in the first, fifth, and ninth bays have overlights with glazing bars. The leftmost house, No. 6, has a ribbed door, while Nos. 7 and 8 have flush four-panelled doors. The windows are sash style, with 20th-century sashes replacing three former doorways. All openings are topped with painted stone or rendered lintels that have keyblocks. A central slate inscription panel features a painted moulded wood architrave with fluted pilasters, triglyphs, and a pediment displaying an armorial device. The inscription notes that the building was erected by James Gramer, a citizen and goldsmith of London and a native of the area, with an endowment of £2,000. The interiors were not inspected.
