Description

The stable block to Hazlewood House, built around 1850, serves multiple functions including stabling, a tack room, a carriage house, and accommodation for grooms. Constructed from rubble with brick dressings and slate roofs, this long, narrow building consists of three two-storey sections. It is positioned against a hillside, with one storey facing the road and two storeys facing the courtyard, which is adjacent to the Coach House.

The central section on the lower side features a gable that is brought forward, with coping and kneelers above the adjacent eaves line. It has wide paired plank doors set under a steel lintel, along with a two-light casement window with glazing bars in a segmental arch. The jambs of the window extend down to the lintel below. To the left, there is a three-light window above another three-light window and a door, while to the right, a two-light modern steel window is positioned above a stable door, accompanied by two-light casements with glazing bars.

A central square wooden ventilating louvre is located on the right, and the building features coped verges. To the left, set back, is a cottage with a three-light window above a door and a two-light window, along with a lean-to structure. To the right, at a slight angle, is a stable section with three two-light windows above two doors and two additional two-light windows.

The return gable, which faces the main house, includes a two-light window with Y-tracery and diamond leading set in a brick four-centred arch, topped with a raised coping on kneelers. At the back of this end unit is another flush gable of a similar design, featuring paired plank doors under a four-centred arch. Opposite the central ventilator, there is a plank loading door. This stable block remains largely untouched and is part of a group with the main house to the north.
