Description

The gate piers, walls, and piers at the entrance drive to Hazlewood House date from around 1850 and are constructed of rubble. At the entrance from the road, there are two large square piers framing the gateway. To the left, a short section of wall leads to another pier, and to the right, there is a similar short section leading to a pier. From the left pier, a wall approximately 1.25 meters high extends downhill in a series of five bays, each defined by piers, leading to a second pair of gate piers. This is followed by a continuous run of five bays to a small gate and three additional bays to another gate pier, opposite which is a large round section of walling that serves as a second pier for the gateways.

The wall features a series of recesses with roughly ogee-shaped arched heads, and the coping consists of large rough stones set on edge, alternating with lower copings. The piers have flat cappings topped with rough obelisk-like stones arranged in a pyramidal shape, and each pier includes a sunk panel with a rough ogee-arch head. This arrangement creates a picturesque approach to the main house, although it is interrupted partway down the drive. The design details are echoed in walls throughout the estate and reflect the development philosophy used at Hazlewood in the mid-19th century. There are no notable gates remaining, and the wall on the right side of the approach drive is not considered of special interest.
