Description
Coombe Farmhouse is a late 18th or early 19th century farmhouse. It is constructed of rubble, with some remnants of limewash, and has a slate roof. The house is large, with a symmetrical south-facing front under a hipped roof, but with a further bay at the west end, partly under a continuation of the hipped roof which sweeps down. The main front, now set away from the usual approach, is two storeys high, with a cellar, and features 1 plus 3 windows. At ground floor, there are three tripartite 4:12:4-pane sash windows. The first floor has three tripartite sashes, with a central 16-pane sash above a gabled porch and panelled door. The bay to the left is set back slightly to emphasise the symmetry of the rest of the building, and is plain with one shuttered opening at eaves level. The back of the house, now the approach facade, has a scatter of windows, those on the right-hand bay, at the roof-sweep, being at a lower level than the rest. The ground floor features a 3-light horizontal bar casement set behind a wood mullion, a broad 19th century plank door, and a half 16-pane sash window to the right. There is also a 3-light casement set within a brick segmental arch, a set of stone quoins, a further wide 19th-century plank door, and a 3-light casement. The first floor has two 3-light windows and a small 2-light window, with a 3-light window far right. Above the first door is a tall, narrow 2-light stair window; to the right of this a small eaves stack. There is also a small eaves stack to the right return and a larger cropped stack near the ridge. The left return has a half-hip with a central eaves brick stack, and a cellar entrance with a brick arch and large quoins, below 3-light and 2-light casement windows. The interior has not been inspected, but it is likely to retain original fittings.
