Description

No. 22 High Street is a Grade II* listed building of uncertain purpose, associated with the adjoining Abbey gatehouse, and is now partly a dwelling. It is part of a group of attached buildings and likely dates from the late 16th century, with later alterations. The structure is built of coursed sandstone rubble and features an old plain-tile roof. It has an L-plan layout, with a short wing extending to the rear on the left side.

The building stands two high storeys tall and has a four-window range. On the left, there is a chamfered pointed doorway that contains a 19th or 20th-century ribbed door. To the right, there is a plank doorway, and a boarded-up window with a wooden lintel. The first floor has been converted into a flat and features restored two-light chamfered stone mullioned windows, while the second bay includes a 20th-century two-light cemented mullioned window.

At the rear, the gabled wing is constructed of ashlar and has a three-light window on the first floor. There is also a plank door in an altered opening on the right return side. The main range has double plank doors, and the first floor contains two two-light windows. Throughout the building, there are recessed chamfered mullioned windows. It is said to have tie and collar roof trusses with wind braces.
