Description

The Workshop Range at Abbey Farm is a Grade II* listed building. To the north, there is a two-storey, three-window range that may have originally served as a small stable and cartshed. It features two open bays supported by a central pier with timber lintels over the ground floor to the right. There is a separate doorway with a brick arched head to the left, and an external staircase leading to an upper door, which is flanked by loft windows. The staircase is a later addition and interrupts a voussoir headed window.

The southern building, which may be slightly older, is also two-storeyed and has a three-window range. It includes two wide doorways and a single window under a common lintel. An advanced bay to the right forms an outshut and contains a single window with a cambered stone head. Notably, part of a tomb slab featuring a cross-circle motif from the early 14th century is incorporated into the wall above the doorway.

The western elevation at the rear of this range showcases some of the original fabric from an abbey building. The construction of the southern section of the wall, which extends beyond the current buildings, is made of uncoursed rubble and is distinctly different from other structures on the site, including the northern extension of this building. Additionally, the regular spacing and alignment of the four pointed-arched windows in the southern section suggest they may be in their original positions. In the northern section, there is another similar window that is aligned differently and is likely re-sited, along with a blocked pointed arched doorway below it.
