Description
Fosters Yard is a building located on Market Street in Polesworth, dating from the mid-18th century with late 19th-century alterations. It was originally used as a shop and dwelling and is now a bar and restaurant. The structure is built of Flemish bond brick with a dog-tooth cornice, and the front is covered with colourwashed render. The roof is made of old plain tiles and features coped gable parapets and truncated end stacks. The building has an L-plan with a wing on the left side extending to the rear. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range.
The front facade includes a late 20th-century half-glazed door with a blocked overlight, situated between two very large late 19th-century shop bays that are covered by a single flat roof, with a lean-to wooden canopy supported by iron brackets. To the right, there is a late 19th-century shop front with a painted wood fascia and cornice. The first floor features three-light casement windows with top lights, horizontal glazing bars, and a central opening light, all set under segmental arches. There are also two late 19th-century dormers, each with three-light casements and horizontal glazing bars.
At the rear, there is a long colourwashed irregular wing that has a five-window range. The interior of the ground floor has been opened up but still retains ogee stop-chamfered ceiling beams. An original open-well staircase features a scrolled string and column-on-vase balusters, along with some 18th-century two-panelled doors.
