Description
Abbey Gatehouse is a late 14th-century structure that now serves as a gatehouse with a flat above. It is part of a group of attached buildings. The building features regular coursed sandstone at the lower part, while the upper section is timber-framed with studding, a middle rail, and brick infill. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has coped gable parapets with kneelers, along with the remains of a finial on the right side.
The gatehouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The high ground floor includes a large wide gateway on the right. To the left, there is a pedestrian gateway with chamfered jambs and an elliptical arch made of two orders, along with two small round-arched lights of different sizes above and to the left. The first floor features partly-leaded three-light wood mullioned windows. At the rear, the gateway has a cambered beam.
To the right of the pedestrian gateway, there is a 14th-century doorway with a chamfered pointed arch and a hood mould that has return stops, which contains a 20th-century plank door. The building also has two 20th-century box dormers. Inside, there is a two-centred arched doorway in the mezzanine to the left, with roll-moulding that supports massive joists. Above this is another two-centred arched doorway, and the late 14th-century three-bay roof features cambered tie beams, arched braces, and king posts with struts to the collars and purlins, although the rafters have been renewed. Abbey Gatehouse is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
