Description
The Alders is a house that has been converted into a day nursery. It was built in the late 18th century, with a mid-19th century addition. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof, which includes a brick cross-axial stack and an end stack. The building has a double-depth, central-staircase layout and stands two stories high, presenting a symmetrical three-window facade.
There are ground and first floor sill bands, a top cornice, and a stone-coped brick parapet, with the outer windows set in forward projections. The round-headed entrance features a doorcase with pilasters and an open pediment, topped by a fanlight with decorative glazing bars above a six-panel door. The ground floor includes canted bay windows with plastered parapets and four-pane horned sashes. The first-floor windows have rubbed brick flat arches with keystones above plate-glass horned sashes.
To the left, there is a mid-19th century two-storey wing that shares similar architectural details, including brick sill bands and a top cogged frieze. Its windows have brick cambered arches, with the first-floor windows featuring twelve-pane sashes. The rear of the building has a gabled wing. The interior has not been inspected. The Alders is part of the same build as Tame House.
