Description
The Red Lion Hotel is a building that was originally constructed as a private house but has a long history as an inn. It has a core dating back to the 17th century and was extended and remodeled in the early 18th century. The exterior features stucco over brick and stone, with a roof that is not visible. The building stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range with a central doorway. This doorway is flanked by full-height canted bays that contain three-light stone mullioned windows with small panes in the upper storeys. There are also two and three-light transomed casement windows above the courtyard entry to the right. The central door is set in a moulded architrave, supported by console brackets that carry an entablature, and is covered by a cast-iron and glass canopy that includes lettering. At the rear, there is a parallel range that retains 17th-century mullioned windows in the gable wall leading to a passage, with a coped gable featuring moulded kneelers above, and a large side wall stack. Additionally, there is another stack built into the northeast corner. The frontage block of the hotel includes a two-storey building from the 17th century, which was raised in height while preserving the earlier gable structure during the 18th century. The interior has not been inspected.
