Description
The Bird in Hand Public House is a public house dated 1889, designed by William Larner Sugden. It features ashlar stonework on the ground floor and mock timber-framing on the upper levels, topped with a plain-tiled roof. The building stands three storeys high and has a two-window range facing the Market Place, along with a single gabled return to Sheep Market.
The Market Place façade is defined by paired gables that create two bays. The central doorway is framed by a moulded stone architrave with an ogival arch and an entablature above. Flanking the doorway are three and four-light mullioned windows, each with ogivally-arched upper panes. A moulded bressumer with foliate scrollwork relief supports the jettied mock-timbered upper storey.
There is a prominent ten-light mullioned oriel window with leaded lights and some stained glass. Above, the paired jettied gables each feature a three-light leaded mullioned window with an embattled cambered bressumer. The bargeboards are adorned with scrollwork. The building also has twisted stone axial and end wall stacks with castellated caps.
The Sheep Market elevation is similar, consisting of a single gable, with a blocked door now serving as a window to the right, which has a date above it. The interior has not been inspected.
