Description
The White House is a cottage that may date back to the 15th century, with later alterations and additions. It features a timber frame with brick infill and some areas of brick rebuilding, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a brick off-ridge stack and a corner stack. It follows a baffle-entry plan and consists of three framed bays aligned north-south, facing east. The central bay was extended to the south, likely in the 17th century, and to the north, probably in the early 18th century. The cottage has one storey and an attic, with three windows that are 20th-century casements featuring leaded panes. There is an eyebrow dormer to the left of the centre and a 20th-century nail-studded door to the right of the centre. The framing includes square panels of irregular size and straight braces, with an exposed collar and tie beam roof truss visible in the northern section. Inside, the central bay was formerly open to the roof and contains fragments of a timber-framed smoke hood.
