Description
This is a 19th-century milepost located outside 32 Swan Lane in Draycott in the Clay. It is made of hollow cast iron and has a triangular shape with a sloping top. The milepost is painted white and features raised black lettering. The inscription on the left side reads: "YOXALL 6 KINGS BROMLEY 8 ½ LICHFIELD 14," while the right side states: "SUDBURY 2 ½ ASHBOURNE 12 ½." The top of the milepost is marked "DRAYCOTT."
This milepost is significant as it remains in its original location and is part of a group of similar structures, many of which are listed, that indicate routes in East Staffordshire. It serves as a reminder of the increasing importance of road transport for people and goods during the 19th century. As a well-preserved example of a milepost in situ, it is worthy of listing.
